al-Farabi on Estates of the Realm - Dictionary of Arguments

Höffe I 129
Estates/al-Farabi/Höffe: [al-Farabi] Ideal state is composed of five groups or estates,
1 persons who are wise persons in both the theoretical and practical sense.
2 (...) persons responsible for religion, including the speakers, poets and musicians.
3 (...) the metrologists, including the accountants, land surveyors, doctors and astrologers.
4 (...) thus far later than in Plato's Politeia, the military and the guards come.
5 (...) the "rich" who are responsible for the prosperity of the state: the farmers, shepherds and merchants(1).
Höffe: It is striking that a large part of the population, to which al-Fārābī presumably belonged for a longer period of time in order to earn a living, is lacking in workers and servants.
>State (Polity)/al-Farabi.
